Drug Uses

Topamax is an oral drug with anticonvulsant and antimigraine properties. As anticonvulsant, Topamax can be administered to patients aged 2 years and older. As antimigraine agent, Topamax can be administered to patients aged 12 years and older. Topamax oral tablets are approved as:

• initial monotherapy of newly diagnosed epilepsy;
• conversion from combination therapy to monotherapy of epilepsy;
• monotherapy or adjunctive therapy of primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures or partial onset seizures (with or without secondary generalized seizures);
• prevention of drop attacks and treatment of seizures caused by Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS);
• adjunctive therapy of seizures in patients who fail to control seizures by means of other anticonvulsants;
• prophylactic therapy of recurring migraine attacks in adolescents and adults.

The maximum dose of Topamax for epileptic patients is 400mg per day in two divided doses. The standard doses of Topamax for migraine prevention vary from 50mg to 100mg per day in two divided doses.

Missed Dose

If you forget to take your usual dose of Topamax, use it as soon as you remember. Be attentive and do not use extra (double) dose of this antiepileptic and antimigraine agent if it is almost time for the next prescribed tablet.

More Information

In a few cases, the maximum daily dose of Topamax 200mg can be prescribed to prevent migraine attacks. Side effects of Topamax are dose-dependent. Therefore, when increasing Topamax dose from 100 to 200 mg per day, the risk of adverse effects increases.

Storage

Topamax tablets should be stored at temperature not above 30°C, in a dry warm place away from heat and moisture.

Warnings

Within four weeks after the start of using Topamax tablets, some patients may experience eye disorders associated with increased intraocular pressure. If you have any signs or symptoms of eye problems, stop using Topamax anticonvulsant.

Topamax Side Effects

Children and adults may experience the same Topamax adverse events that are mild to moderate, the intensity of which depends on the dosage. Most often, Topamax may cause such adverse events as hypoesthesia, fever, difficulty with memory, depression, nervousness, speech disorder, somnolence, dizziness, paresthesia, psychomotor slowing, fatigue, anorexia, abdominal pain, nausea, taste perversion, decreased weight, diarrhea, abnormal vision or nasopharyngitis. Less often, Topamax may cause bleeding of different form and severity, including ecchymosis or mild epistaxis.
